Our waka our treasure

Nga Tai Whakarongo Whanau Hoe Waka have a deep and meaningful history with Whaingaroa (Raglan), as this was the birthplace of the club. The club was endorsed by the local hapu, and along with founding members Hoturoa and Kimberley Barkely Kerr played an active role in the establishment of the club. In the 1990's the club later shifted to the banks of the Waikato Awa, our awa tupuna (river ancestor). Through the tireless efforts of the then club members and supporters, and the eventual approval from council; an waka whare was built to house our waka in 2007, where they continue to take pride of place today. You will notice that there is a theme to the names of our waka as they pay homage to the rich history the club has with Whaingaroa and Waikato Awa. Respect and recognition is given to the late Whaea Eva Rickard, who named the club Nga Tai Whakarongo - Listening to the tides. It is said that when naming the club a pod of orca came into the Whaingaroa harbour which formed the design of the tohu for the club.
